It used to be that if someone wanted to get in touch with you and you weren’t home to take the phone call, they would leave a message on your answering machine. These days, even kids have cell phones. Like all good things, they have become a permanent attachment and a lifeline that, even though we didn’t have them years ago, we can’t do without now.
Here are some tips that you can use for giving yourself a break from that piece of plastic and metal, which seems to be permanently affixed to your head.
- Turn the Ringer Off – If someone calls and it’s important, they are going to leave a message, just as they did years ago. There are times that you just need to take a break from it, especially when you are out with someone else. Talking on the phone when in someone else’s company is just plain rude.
- Turn the Light Off – Even if you have the ringer off, you are still going to have that light that lets you know that you have an email. If you are used to using it, then chances are it will feel weird. However, you will get used to it. The world won’t stop turning because you don’t read that email then and there.
- Make a Schedule – You have everything else scheduled in your day; make a schedule for your phone. Figure out a good time to check your messages and respond to them. Again, this should not be when you are out to lunch or spending time with your family.
- Don’t Let it Rule You – Your phone should be a help, not a hindrance. Make sure that it’s something that is something that you can enjoy, not something that you come to hate.
The point of a cell phone is to make things easier. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean you should give up your life for it.
